Blog Entry #3 Interview of a Bilingual Teacher

For my interview with a bilingual speaking teacher I decided to interview Ms. Momin. She is currently teaching at Barrington Place Elementary school. However, they are not a Bilingual or Dual language school but they have majority of ESL speaking students. Ms. Momin works with students and teaches like a Bilingual teacher also has experiences from many years of teaching in different Bilingual schools. Also Ms. Momin teaches every Saturday at her church and her class is a Bilingual speaking class. Because majority of the students at her school speak a native language. She communicates with them in English and their native language as well. Ms Momin uses many strategies to help her students comprehend certain lesson. She uses things that can work best for individuals and at times she uses multiple manipulative because every student comprehends certain criteria with different understandings. Researchers state, “Human language manifests itself in spoken, signed, and written systems across more than 6,500 languages documented to date.” (Ortega, 2011, Pg. 2). Just like Ortega, Ms. Momin helps many of her students work together and scaffold from each other. That way they are able to speak with each other clearly and start getting used to certain everyday words they may be using. So it is easier for many students to write with certain everyday strategies they may be using within the classroom. Ms. Momin always wants her students to feel comfortable that way they can express themselves so it is easier for Ms. Momin to provide them the  best support they may need. There are many other methods Ms. Momin uses within her classroom as well. She has word wall words the students can always refer back to or use while writing a story or to have access to use them at all times. Researchers state, “The single most important source of L2 learning is comprehensible input, or language which learners process for meaning and which contains something to be learned, that is, linguistic data slightly above their current level” (Ortega, 2011. Pg 59).  Ms. Momin always encourages her students to positive aspects. If theres a certain word she may not know then she goes above and beyond just to help the student better by researching about it or going on google translate. Ms. Momin has a well structured classroom which is always motivating for all her students. She never wishes to give up on any of her students. She always wants to help her students in any way that may work for them. Often times when students are working with each other she wants her struggling students to learn and not just follow along. So she groups her low learning students with her middle learning students as well. She doesn't just group her low students with a high students. Because she doesn't want her high students to do all the work. Ms. Momin has encouraged me to teach my students in many different ways that are always beneficial for them.

  1. Hello Seemin,
Great job on your video interview with Ms. Momin! I think the questions you asked and the way you presented the video was awesome! Ms. Momin seems to be an excellent teacher and very knowledgeable on the way she teaches. You mentioned a lot on the way Ms. Momin conducts her class and the different strategies she uses in order to communicate and help her students when they make mistakes or don’t quite understand. I loved the fact that Ms. Momin is the type of teacher that truly does whatever she can to ensure her students success and makes sure that they manifest at learning a new language. Ortega mentioned, “foreign language anxiety and communicative self-confidence are also considered key in predicting motivation”(Ortega,2011, Pg.179). Just like your interview with Ms. Momin my interview with Dr. Blake was similar in that they both use wall words especially as a review tool or to help with assignments with words they either have forgotten or are constantly struggling with. Question: Do you think students enjoy learning from Ms. Momin more because she uses a variety of teaching mechanisms vs. other teachers who simply just teach from a book and have limited peer interaction?

    1. Jolie,
I also think it was very important and a great strategy Ms. Momin had used around her students. Because a teacher should also find multiple ways to communicate with her students that way they are interacting with each other and exploring new understandings. Researchers have stated, "In other words, the two traits of communicative anxiety and self-perceived competence, while stable, are shaped by past experiences through contacts with L2 speakers, and both contribute to the degree of L2 communicative confidence." (Ortega, 2011, Pg. 203). When an individual communicates in a well developing manner then any child will feel comfortable communicating with the teacher or any individual. Ms. Momin communicates with students that will keep them engaged and motivated in learning. However, she will find things that interests the student. That way they are able to communicate easily and make certain connections as well. I think that is a great idea to communicate with individuals. Because if you don't find anything that can interest an individual then they may not be able to have an easier time communicating and understanding the certain lesson. As I have observed Ms. Momins class for a while now and I think students really enjoy learning from Ms. Momin. Because they are learning in a fun engaging way which interests them. Instead of simply learning from a book. Because students also need some of hands on type of learning as well.

  2. Great Video Seemin! I really enjoyed watching your interview. I really enjoyed Ms. Momin's idea of motivation that she uses within her classroom. I like how she mentioned that the biggest motivation in her class and when the students actually "get it" and feel both comfortable and successful because it will make students want to participate and learn more. Ortega mentions, “Thus, an important general benefit of interactional modifications is their contingency, in that learners are potentially engaging in what educational researchers would call just-in-time learning, or learning at the right point of need,” (Ortega, 2011, pg. 79). Praising them allows them to feel more confident and I like how Ms. Momin mentioned that even for the smallest steps allows her students to feel successful in the classroom.

    1. Sara,
I also think it is really important to have your students motivated in any type of teaching you as a teacher may be doing throughout the day. Because if the students is not motivated in certain assignment then the chances are they may not be able to comprehend the certain lesson. Researchers have stated, "Motivational intensity, which we can explain as how much effort people reportedly expend in learning the language." (Ortega, 2011, Pg. 169). I think Ms. Momin does exactly what researchers have stated. Because she is always going above and beyond to help the students learning in an academic manner. Even if the students are motivationally involved they are still expanding their thinking by working with peers and gaining more details by scaffolding together. Also when the teacher praises the students that always helps the students gain a self motivation which will always want the student to accomplish more things.

  3. Hi Seemin, I enjoyed watching your interview with Ms. Momin. I really agreed with Ms. Momin when she was talking student motivation and how important it is for a student to feel motivated to learn a new language. I also really liked how Ms. Momin made a conscious effort to incorporate things she knew her students who be successful with in her lesson plans. She wants to leave a positive effect on her students. Ms. Momin wants her students to remain positive while also teaching them what they need to learn. According to Ortega “Neither positive attitudes towards the target language and its speakers nor abundant and meaningful comprehension of L2 messages are in and of themselves sufficient for second language learning to be successful, although both are certainly important ingredients in a highly complex environmental equation” (Ortega,2011, Pg.79). This is very true in Ms. Momin’s case.

    1. Almira,
I think it is always important to keep your students motivated in everything they may be learning. Because if the child is not motivated then they may not be focused on the certain assignment they may be doing. And it is really important to have your students being successful in certain learning than having them to fail in any type of way. Researchers have stated, "Thus, an important general benefit of interactional modifications is their contingency, in that learners are potentially engaging in what educational researchers would call just-in-time learning, or learning at the right point of need,” (Ortega, 2011, pg. 79). Just like Ms. Momin she always has her students learning at the right point of need. Also even if the students are working on independent work they still have opportunities to look around the room and find helpful words or ideas such as the word wall or any other anchor charts and posters listed on the wall.

    2. Seemin,
I completely agree with you. I really like how Ms. Momin uses a lot of different strategies and techniques to incorporate English in her students’ lives. Students may not realize how much the little things like word walls and anchor charts could be helping them learn and practice English. It also seems that Ms. Momin has a lot of effective motivational techniques she uses with her students.

  4. Hi Seemin,
I really enjoyed watching your interview. I believe you got some useful information for when you begin teaching yourself. You mentioned Ms. Momin used motivation as one of her success strategies. I believe many teachers use this strategy. I think it is awesome that she went out of her way and made sure to incorporate things her students will be comfortable and familiar with already. Ortega says, “by a student becoming intimately familiar with participants and settings through long-term observation and participation, as well as by directly eliciting the participants’ perspective through interviews and by gathering information about the wider context, such as institutional documents and cultural artefacts” (Ortega, 2011. Pg 229). The students will be more motivated to participate in the lesson if it is something they are comfortable with in their cultural background more than likely.

    1. Jessica,
You are absolutely right, because when I did start student teaching I was really unaware of all the different ways each child has to be taught. Because I didn't know the difference in ways to teach an L2 learner and a different learner. I thought that if we differentiated the instructions for the child then it would have been beneficial. However, theres a lot of modifications and always have to accommodate certain things that can be beneficial for students and can motivate them as well. Researchers have stated, "foreign language anxiety and communicative self-confidence are also considered key in predicting motivation" (Ortega, 2011, Pg. 179). Ms. Momin always lets students refer back to any word wall words the student may need help with or may need better assistance on. That way the student is not giving up in their learning and always using contact clues or any beneficial help they may need that is around them at all times. And always it helps them stay motivated and not wonder around if they have nothing to refer back to or do at the certain time they may be confused about.

  5. Keyerra,
I also think the strategies Ms. Momin has used with her students were amazing. Because it is very important as a teacher to know what the students may be comfortable in doing. That way having few peer interactions are very beneficial for the students. Researchers have stated, "Speakers in a high-use L2 environment have typically developed higher communicative competence and are relatively accustomed to successful experiences." (Ortega, 2011, Pg. 203). Within Ms. Momin's classroom she uses variety of ways to communicate with her students where the end result is amazing. Because her students are able to understand the lesson and certain directions Ms. Momin provides to them. And also students have an easier time communicating with each other in the classroom or other students in the playground as well. They are no longer hesitated to talk to one another. The students have more confident in anything they may be doing with their work or any activity they may be doing as well.

  6. Nice interview, Ms.Momin mentioned that students succeed when they feel comfortable and successful, it makes them want to do better. I love how she mentioned that we should praise the small things. According to Oretga, an individual’s communicative confidence in the L2 greatly contributes to her or his willingness to communicate in their second language” (Ortega, 2011 Pg. 203). I believe, high motivation in self-confident students will help them stand firm against any hardships in language learning. Various factors can lower self-confidence, but praising those small efforts can keep students away from
    anxieties in classroom.

  7. Seemin, I liked the questions you asked and I liked hearing Ms. Momin say that she works hard help the kids and she wants them to be successful. I agree with Ms. Momin, students should feel like they are being successful and praising them, like she said, can also help them accomplish that. I think that Ms. Momin has taken the time to get to know her students. It seems like she has been doing this for a long time, and at the say time, she looks very young. I wonder, how long has she been working with ELL students, and I am also wondering if English was her first language?
